It's Not What You Earn, It's What You Keep--Taxation Tips for Writers and Artists
Saturday, January 28, 2012

Are you a writer, storyteller, musician or visual artist? Maximize your after-tax earnings at this money-saving one-day workshop.

Gwynn Scheltema, a full-time freelance writer and editor, guides participants through a fun—yes, fun!—and informative day of tax tips and money-saving facts, drawing on her 25 years of experience as an accountant, auditor and tax preparer.

Aspiring and professional members of the arts community can claim special tax considerations—even before earning a penny. If you can’t answer the following questions, you’re probably paying more tax than you need to:

  • How does Revenue Canada define “freelance”?
  • If I win a writing contest, is the prize considered income?
  • What expenses can I claim?
  • Should I keep all my novel expenses for the year when the book is published?
  • Do I have to register for HST?

Knowledge is the key. Gwynn’s practical exercises point out the expenses and deductions you can claim and what lines to put them on.

Preregistration is required.
