WCDR Breakfast Featuring Literary Agent Hilary McMahon
Saturday, January 14, 2012

“Do I need an agent?” is a question often posed by writers when discussing ways to get published. There are so many options available in today’s digitized world, that the decision on how to proceed can be overwhelming. On Saturday, Jan. 14 at the regular breakfast meeting of The Writers’ Community of Durham Region (WCDR), those who are wondering about the benefits of having an agent will appreciate the wisdom of Hilary McMahon. The literary agent for one of Canada’s most respected agencies will share her wealth of knowledge on the subject of publishing. She will explain why authors need agents and how to approach one. She will offer a frank discussion about the challenges of getting published, and include tips on query letters, how to market yourself, industry standards, and what to expect once you have signed on the dotted line.
The meeting will be held at the Ajax Convention Centre on Beck Crescent, south of Highway 2, off Chambers Drive, which is just off Salem Road.

Pre-registration is required – deadline for registering is 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11.

After the meeting, for an extra fee of $10 per person, breakfast attendees can take part in a mini workshop titled “Break into Blogging.” In today’s publishing society, writers have to blog. Why, you ask? Because agents and publishers expect writers to cultivate an active readership – gather loyal readers – not only to prove they are willing to work, but also that they understand the business of publishing in today’s market. Facilitated by Noelle Bickle, this workshop will focus on helping attendees find their unique blogging voice and capture the right market for their work. As an alternative, WCDR members attending the breakfast may choose to pay $10 extra to attend a 15-minute, one-on-one blue-pencil session with a published professional or editor after the meeting.

At the WCDR monthly breakfast meetings, experienced and aspiring writers gather, learn and connect. The Jan. 14 meeting will run from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Registration fees include a gourmet breakfast. Fees are $20 for members who pre-pay, or $25 at the door. The non-member rate is $25 and MUST be pre-paid. Tickets for the breakfast are not available at the door.

Pre-registration for the breakfast meeting, mini-workshop and blue-pencil session is required. Register online at www.wcdr.org no later than 9 a.m. on Wednesday, January 11th.

The Writers’ Community of Durham Region (WCDR) is dedicated to raising the profile of writers of all kinds, and at all levels, by offering a forum through which they can find support, education and networking opportunities. As a non-profit umbrella organization, WCDR has worked since 1995 to draw together individuals and groups with common interests in promoting the art and skill of writing, fostering literacy, and providing moral support to members.
